The story is set in 1941, when the Nazis occupied Ukraine and carried out inhumane purges against the Jewish people living there. Six-year-old Anna (played by Marta Kozlova) miraculously survived despite losing her parents in this atrocity; she hid in the abandoned flue of a Nazi commander's office, unaware of when she would ever see the light of day again. During these days filled with fear, Anna carefully concealed herself during the day, silently waiting for nightfall. Only when everything was asleep in the darkness did she dare to sneak out from her hiding place to look for food and water to sustain her frail life. Despite her struggle for survival, Anna never gave up hope of finding a way to escape.
