The story takes place in a quiet little town, where Duster (played by Joseph Mazzello) and Eric (played by Brad Renfro) are neighbors of the same age. A medical accident disrupts Duster's peaceful life; due to contamination of medical equipment, Duster contracts the terrible AIDS virus during a blood transfusion. Although the unfortunate event was not anyone's fault, Duster's family faces isolation and exclusion from the townspeople. In everyone's eyes, Eric is a troublesome child who struggles to get along with anyone due to his introverted nature. One day, through a bamboo fence, Eric meets Duster. The two quickly become friends, sharing similar personalities. Eric desperately tries to find a way to cure Duster's illness, and after many failed treatments, he resolutely takes Duster on a journey to seek medical help.
