The days of the young and beautiful Afghan girl Donya are not easy. She used to work as a translator for the US military and now suffers from insomnia. She lives alone in an apartment building in Fremont, where most of her neighbors are Afghan immigrants like her. She often goes alone to a struggling restaurant, eating while watching soap operas. Donya works at a fortune cookie factory in town. One day, her boss promoted her, putting her in charge of writing messages on the fortune cookie slips, and her life began to change. As more strangers from the Bay Area read her messages, Donya developed an increasingly irresistible urge to convey a special message to the world — although she is unsure of where that message will go.
