Masagoro (played by Tatsuya Nakadai) is a notorious gangster who has a daughter named Hanako in his middle age, whom he dotes on excessively. Masagoro's tyrannical style has earned him many enemies, and as Hanako grows up day by day, danger is constantly closing in on her. To protect Hanako, Masagoro is willing to pay any price. Matsue (played by Masako Natsume) is Masagoro's adopted daughter and Hanako's sister, chosen by Masagoro for her extraordinary beauty. Matsue was originally accompanied by her brother when they came to Masagoro's house, but her brother ran away, leaving Matsue to support herself alone. Masagoro wants to marry Hanako off to a young man; however, the young man falls in love with Matsue, leading to discord in Masagoro's household. Masagoro dotes on his mistress and neglects his wife, who drinks heavily every day and eventually succumbs to a serious illness and dies. What Masagoro did not expect was that Hanako would actually seek refuge with his enemies. Disheartened, he turns himself in and is thrown into prison, where he soon dies of depression.
