This film is based on one of the most legendary court love stories in Danish history. This film won the Best Screenplay Award and Best Actor Award at the 62nd Berlin Film Festival. Physician Johann Friedrich Struensee (played by Mads Mikkelsen) is selected by King Christian VII of Denmark (played by Mikkel Følsgaard) to accompany him on a journey across Europe. As the king's personal physician, Struensee completely influences the mentally unstable king, gaining his trust and winning the affection of Queen Caroline Matilda (played by Alicia Vikander). The queen quickly falls in love with the handsome doctor. Their romance even becomes a "national event." With the queen's support, Struensee effectively becomes the regent, but his reforms provoke the anger of the nobility. He attempts to stage a coup, only to be executed for "abuse of power" and "violating the dignity of the king."
