As the Third Domestic Revolutionary War entered its second year, our army had shifted to strategic offense. In 1948, after occupying several small and medium-sized cities in Shandong, our East China Field Army decided to conquer the major city of Jinan, which was heavily fortified by Chiang Kai-shek. Led by Ding Yaodong, the Taishan Column, together with other allied forces, was ordered to advance toward Jinan. The enemy commander Wang Yaowu of the Jinan Second Pacification Zone relied on the natural defenses of the Yellow River and high mountains, along with fortified positions, to try to hold Jinan, intending to bog down our army and then strike from both inside and outside with reinforcements from Xuzhou to annihilate our forces in the outer defenses, thus fulfilling Chiang Kai-shek's so-called dream of the "Battle of Jinan." Column Commander Ding Yaodong, following Chairman Mao's specific directive of "attacking the city and its reinforcements in a coordinated manner," analyzed the enemy's situation and made battle arrangements. In the battles around Donggu and the Western Suburb Airport, Ding Yaodong boldly exploited Wang Yaowu's misjudgments, cleverly maneuvering the enemy's elite 19th Army before taking advantage of their vulnerabilities to quickly capture the defensible but challenging Donggu Mountain. While our army launched a powerful military offensive against the enemy, our underground party coordinated closely with the siege troops to intensify political work on the enemy garrison commander Wu Huawen at the Western Suburb Airport, eventually convincing him to recognize the situation and lead his troops in surrender. The resolution of the Western Suburb Airport cut off the enemy's air support route, exposing Jinan entirely to our artillery fire. Subsequently, our army broke through the outer city of Jinan in a very short time. On the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival, our forces launched a full-scale assault. During the siege combat, Battalion Commander Meng Dalong and Company Commander Cui Tiezhu led the assault teams to charge repeatedly amidst heavy enemy fire. The fighting was exceptionally fierce, with significant casualties on our side. Cui Tiezhu led the remaining few soldiers tenaciously to storm the city through a breached wall and engaged in close-quarters combat with the enemy. Our artillery fire finally created a large breakthrough in the city wall. Under our army's powerful offensive, Wang Yaowu was panicking; his elite troops were being stalled and disintegrated by our assault teams, while the Xuzhou reinforcements were scattered by our Huanghe Column. Ultimately, our army captured the enemy's command post and took Wang Yaowu prisoner, thus ending the Jinan Campaign. The victory in the Jinan Campaign composed a resounding prelude for the nationwide strategic decisive battle.
