The rural coachman, Iizaburo (played by Takahiro Tamura), has a diligent and kind-hearted wife, Ashi (played by Kazuko Yoshiyuki). When Iizaburo is away, the idler, Toji (played by Tora Fujiyoshi), frequently courts her, but she remains unmoved. However, she ultimately succumbs to Toji's youthful and strong physique, and during a snowstorm night, they strangle Iizaburo to death and dispose of his body in a dry well. Out of guilt, Toji daily dumps fallen leaves into the well. Three years later, villagers gossip about the appearance of Iizaburo's ghost, and Ashi begins to be haunted by it, gradually unable to bear the psychological pressure. To dispel the villagers' suspicions, Toji commits another murder. When Toji and Ashi risk entering the dry well to move Iizaburo's remains, they unexpectedly encounter his ghost.
