In 1963, at the age of 21, Stephen Hawking's life was marked by two major events, one tragic and one joyful. That year he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a disease that would make his body increasingly unresponsive, leaving only his heart, lungs, and brain functioning; eventually, he would lose even his heart and lung function. Doctors predicted that he would only live for another two years. This devastating blow nearly caused Hawking to give up his studies, but the appearance of a girl at a birthday dance miraculously changed everything; she was Jane, Hawking's first wife.
