Masao Yanagida (Hiroshi Sekiguchi) and Kiriko (Momoe Yamaguchi) are a pair of unfortunate siblings living in Kokura, Kitakyushu, who lost their parents at a young age and have relied on each other ever since. One day, Masao is arrested as a suspect in a robbery and murder case. With compelling evidence against him, the honest and dull-witted elementary school teacher finds himself unable to defend himself. Firmly believing in her brother's innocence, Kiriko travels to Tokyo to seek the help of the renowned elite lawyer Kinzo Otsuka (Rentaro Mikuni) for Masao's defense. Otsuka, who only cares about money, coldly rejects the desperate Kiriko, a scene witnessed by the journalist Keiichi Abe (Tomokazu Miura) from "Social Weekly." Abe aids Kiriko with various connections and diligently investigates the truth of the case, but ultimately cannot change Masao's fate of being sentenced to death, leading Kiriko’s life to spiral into despair. In contrast, the high-flying Otsuka enjoys a life of luxury without realizing that his fate is also influenced by the small people living at the bottom... This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by the mystery writer Seicho Matsumoto.
