During the Warring States period, in a small mountain village near Lake Biwa, there lived Gen Juro (portrayed by Mori Masayuki) and his wife Miyaki (portrayed by Tanaka Kinuyo), as well as his brother-in-law Tohbei (portrayed by Ozawa Ei) and sister Abumi (portrayed by Mito Mitsuko). They made their living by opening a small porcelain kiln and producing ceramics. In the midst of the chaos of war, Gen Juro hoped to make a fortune from the unrest, while Tohbei aspired to become a samurai and rise above the common folk. They left their hometown with the high-quality porcelain they had produced to sell in the market, and indeed made a substantial profit. Gen Juro even encountered a noble lady of stunning beauty, Wakasa (portrayed by Kyo Machiko), and was lost in bliss. One day, on his late return home, Gen Juro was warned by a monk about encountering something unclean... Meanwhile, Tohbei also fulfilled his wish of becoming a samurai and found good fortune, feeling quite majestic, but he surprisingly encountered his wife while seeking pleasure... The terrifying reality lay before them.
