As the suffering of the people deepens, God sends his son Jesus (played by Enrique Irazoqui) to earth. Inspired, the young girl Mary (played by Margherita Caruso) gives birth to Jesus as a virgin, and she and her fiancé Joseph (played by Marcello Morante) raise him together. Jesus loves humanity so deeply that he guides people towards goodness through various miracles, gaining more and more followers. However, the world is already decaying, ruled by greed and brutality. Those shameless rulers decide to eliminate this holy son from heaven... The film prominently features non-professional actors, with the Virgin Mary played by the director Pier Paolo Pasolini's mother. It won the Best Cinematography, Best Makeup, and Best Director awards from the Italian National Society of Film Critics in 1965; the OCIC (International Catholic Organization for Cinema) award and a special jury prize at the Venice Film Festival in 1964; and the Best Foreign Film Director award at the Finnish National Film Awards in 1968.
