The story begins in Japan in 1941, as war breaks out. Higashikawa Koji (played by Sato Takeru), an ordinary passionate youth, is forced to join the "Iron Blood Loyal Army" along with most of his peers, stepping onto the smoke-filled battlefield. Hidden deep within Koji's heart is a secret: in order to earn money for Koji's middle school tuition, his brother Seigo (played by Kaname Jun) went to work in the United States. Although the family is often separated, their bond remains strong. Now, with Japan at war with the U.S., Seigo has unexpectedly become a soldier in the American army. With this secret weighing on him, Koji, along with his friend Katsuichi, arrives in Okinawa, where they fight to repel the American forces' landing. However, in reality, the Japanese side has long abandoned this small island, meaning that Koji and his comrades are destined to become cannon fodder. As he witnesses his comrades falling one by one to American bullets, Koji begins to harbor a deep-seated hatred for the U.S. forces.
