In France, a girl named Mathilde (played by Audrey Tautou) is left disabled due to polio. The boy from her village, Manech (played by Gaspard Ulliel), is her childhood sweetheart, and the two have become engaged. However, with the outbreak of World War I, Manech is drafted, and their engagement becomes uncertain. The war is prolonged and brutal, but Mathilde believes in a profound connection with Manech, convinced that he is still alive. In 1920, Mathilde receives devastating news: five French soldiers have been sentenced to death for self-infliction by a military tribunal and are left to die in front of the enemy's trench known as "The Dusk Bingo," with Manech being the youngest among them. Mathilde embarks on a difficult quest for the truth. She hires a private detective, has someone inspect military files, and tirelessly interviews survivors of "The Dusk Bingo" trench, depleting her parents' inheritance in the process. The search is painful and lengthy; Mathilde seems to experience the horrors of war herself and uncovers many unknown secrets about "The Dusk Bingo" trench…
