This is an early work by the epic filmmaker Abel Gance, with an original length of nine hours. The film tells a story similar to today's television soap operas: a railroad engineer saves a girl from an accident and adopts her as his daughter. However, both he and his son develop feelings for her. To prevent his son from claiming her, he arranges for the girl to marry a wealthy man. Yet, there is an uncontainable love between the son and the adopted daughter. The son has a disagreement with her husband, leading to his unfortunate death. The old man blames the adopted daughter for his son's death and refuses to see her again. Later, he becomes blind, and the adopted daughter secretly returns to care for him until his dying days. The film's revolutionary aspects include: the opening train accident montage uses rapid editing for a powerful impact; numerous literary references are added to an otherwise mediocre plot, enriching its connotations; both cinematography and editing exhibit a certain formal quality, such as the rhythm of the shots aligning with the music, and machines in the imagery serving as symbols of modernity, paving the way for "pure cinema." The title suggests a cycle of fate and desire, hinted at through the imagery of wheels.
