After years of running a pool hall, Eddie (played by Paul Newman) discovers a talented young player named Vincent (played by Tom Cruise). Vincent embodies the flair that Eddie once had at the table, prompting Eddie to take him under his wing and help him make a name in the world of pool. Together, Eddie, Vincent, and Vincent's girlfriend head to Atlantic City for a major tournament. Along the way, Vincent participates in several smaller tournaments, and despite ongoing disagreements with Eddie, he wins quite a bit of money. Meanwhile, Eddie's passion for pool is reignited as he trains Vincent, but when he picks up the cue again, he unexpectedly loses. Disheartened, Eddie decides to leave Vincent and practice on his own to reclaim his former glory. When a determined Eddie returns to the Atlantic tournament, he finds that Vincent has become his opponent. At this point, Vincent’s pursuit of money has surpassed his love for the game, and the match between Eddie and Vincent turns into a battle of dignity and wealth.
