On a sweltering summer day, weary young detective Murakami (played by Toshiro Mifune) finishes shooting practice and boards a crowded, unpleasant bus home, only to suddenly realize that his service weapon has been stolen. He desperately chases after the thief but ultimately loses track of his target. Dejected, Murakami approaches Section Chief Sato (played by Jo Shishido) to request his dismissal. The kind chief advises him to seek help from veteran detective Ichikawa (played by Raiji Kagawa) in the pickpocket division. With Ichikawa's reminder, Murakami recalls a woman standing next to him on the bus, the habitual offender A-Yin (played by Keiko Kishi). Unable to resist Murakami's persistence, A-Yin reveals information about a gun dealer. Following this, Murakami delves into the darkest corners of the city in search of clues about the handgun. Meanwhile, someone is committing crimes with his stolen weapon, and time is running out. The myriad life forms of post-war Japanese cities, seen through the keen eyes of Murakami like a stray dog…
