The film company "Nikkatsu," which has been in business for a century, is most famously known for its representative brand, the "Roman Porno" (known as Pink Movie overseas), which was all the rage in the 1970s and 1980s. This year marks the 45th anniversary of the birth of "Roman Porno." Nikkatsu has specially planned the "Roman Porno Reboot" project, inviting five renowned directors—Tsukamoto Shinya, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Hideo Nakata, Akihiko Shiota, and Sion Sono—to each direct a pink film. Each director must adhere to the traditional rules: there must be a sensual scene every ten minutes, the film must be between 70 to 80 minutes long, produced on a very low budget, and completed within a week, with total creative freedom otherwise. The outcome shows that these five directors not only embraced the challenge but excelled at it.
Yamashita's "Wet Woman" was the first to be revealed, reinterpreting the classic pink film "Wet Lovers," telling the story of a wild girl who intentionally gets wet by the seaside and then cheaply sells herself to passing men. Shiraishi's "The She-Cats" also pays homage to the classic "The She-Cats' Night," moving the setting to the streets of Ikebukuro and depicting the sexual adventures of refugees, single mothers, and infertile wives wandering at night. Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s "Disorderly Naked Dance" features an original story about a comedian, who, as a director, fell into a honey trap, leading to his disgrace. Hideo Nakata, known for "The Ring," makes his debut in the adult world, impressing the post-90s actress Asuka Rin to perform fully naked in the lesbian story "White Lily." The ever unconventional Sion Sono fully expresses his rebellious nature, using sex to counter sex in "Antiporno," casting former AKB member Tomita Mami in her first full nude role.
The reason "Roman Porno" has continued to be remembered for decades is that it was "lewd" with a purpose, low-budget yet with solid scripts, and served as a training ground for young directors honing their craft. Notable directors who started their careers making pink films include Oscar-winning director Yojiro Takita ("Departures"), Masayuki Suo ("Shall We Dance?"), Shuichi Nakaido ("Death Note"), and the late director Yoshimitsu Morita ("Kōrakuen"). After a 28-year hiatus, the pink series is releasing five films at once, which is particularly significant, and they will be gradually released in Japan starting in late November.
