George (Montgomery Clift) is the son of a poor family. Ambitious, he travels a long distance to the big city to live with his uncle, hoping to achieve great success there. In the factory, George meets a female worker named Alice (Shelley Winters), and before long, they become a couple. The appearance of wealthy heiress Angela (Elizabeth Taylor) disrupts George's peaceful life. Caught between two beautiful women and faced with moral dilemmas and interests, George is unsure of whom to choose. The news of Alice's pregnancy drives George to a murderous intent. He arranges to meet Alice on a small boat, intending to stage a drowning accident, but just as he is about to act, his remaining conscience makes it difficult for him to continue. At that moment, the boat capsizes, and Alice drowns, plunging George into scandal.
