George (Montgomery Clift) is the son of a poor family. Ambitious, he travels a long distance to the big city to live with his uncle, hoping to achieve great success there. In the factory, George meets a female worker named Alice (Shelley Winters), and before long, they become a couple. The appearance of wealthy heiress Angela (Elizabeth Taylor) disrupts George's peaceful life.
