Mrs. Watts (Geraldine Page) lives with her son Rudy (John Heard) and daughter-in-law Jessie (Carlin Glynn) after the death of her husband. Although they take care of her daily needs, Jessie is a hot-tempered woman, and living together inevitably leads to some friction between them. Over time, Mrs. Watts, unwilling to endure the situation any longer, starts to contemplate leaving this home. Mrs. Watts dreams of returning to her hometown—a place called Bountiful. However, she cannot find the name of this town on the bus stop sign or on the map. A kind-hearted man drives Mrs. Watts to her destination, and it is only upon arrival that she realizes everything has changed.
