Edward Cole (played by Jack Nicholson), a wealthy businessman, has profited significantly from the privatization of public hospitals in recent years. He has implemented a controversial "two beds in one room" policy to cut costs, which has drawn criticism. However, the strong-willed Cole pays little attention to the backlash, only to soon learn that he has cancer. Initially wanting a private room, he is forced to share with another patient, Carter (played by Morgan Freeman), due to public pressure. Carter, a wise and knowledgeable auto mechanic, has successfully raised three children, but at the cost of sacrificing his dream of becoming a history professor. Once married multiple times and now alone, Cole gradually becomes interested in Carter, and the two older men form a friendship in the hospital. Cole accidentally discovers Carter's "bucket list" and decides to use his resources to make those seemingly impossible dreams a reality, in search of the true meaning of life...
