The soon-to-be-appointed cabinet minister Steve (Jeremy Irons) lives a peaceful and comfortable life with his wife Ingrid and son Martin (Rupert Graves). The appearance of Anna (Juliette Binoche) is like a surging undercurrent crashing against this seemingly perfect family. Anna is the girlfriend of the son, but secretly engages in a passionate romantic relationship with Steve. Memories of her incestuous adolescent relationship with her brother continue to affect her, causing her to seek various opportunities to date Steve while appearing completely natural around Martin. When Steve proposes abandoning his family to be with her, Anna calmly refuses. One day, Martin walks in on the two meeting, and the shock and pain lead him to accidentally fall down the stairs. Steve rushes down to hold his deceased son, while Anna silently leaves, leaving behind a middle-aged man unable to rebuild his collapsed life.
