The play "Cymbeline" is itself full of controversy. As one of Shakespeare's late comedies, it was written around 1610-1611. This story about "love, betrayal, and revenge" is hailed as a classic masterpiece by some and criticized for its chaotic plot lines and tangled narrative by others. In the film, Cymbeline (played by Ed Harris), as the leader of a motorcycle gang, constantly clashes with the police, while his daughter Imogen (Dakota Johnson) fights for her honor and life, and his wife and son plot to take over his drug empire. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival, and Variety praised the performances, as well as the slightly melancholic visuals and scene design. Regarding the adaptation of another Shakespeare work after "Hamlet," director Michael Almereyda stated that Shakespeare's works have always been a source of inspiration for filmmakers: "Check IMDB for Shakespeare; his quotes are more frequent than any other playwright."
