Retired detective John Ferguson (James Stewart) is approached by his former classmate Gavin Elster (Tom Helmore), a shipbuilder. He asks John to follow his wife, claiming that she is often possessed by a ghost. Following Gavin's instructions, John meets a beautiful woman (Kim Novak) at Ernie's restaurant. After tracking her, John discovers that the woman exhibits unusual behavior: driving out, buying flowers at a florist, lingering at the grave of Carlotta Valdes in a cemetery, staring at Carlotta's portrait at the Muir Woods Museum, and finally entering the Mckittrick Hotel, where she appears at a second-floor window. John then investigates the hotel and finds that the woman is registered as Carlotta Valdes, but there is no one in her room. Who exactly is Carlotta Valdes, and can ghosts really possess the living?
