Lao Yangtou (portrayed by Jinmin Pao) is an elderly artist living alone in Huaxian, Shaanxi, and treasures a complete set of shadow puppetry performance tools at home. One day, his son, who has been away for many years, suddenly returns with his foreign girlfriend and grandson Brooks (portrayed by Jiaming Ding). Shocked by the cultural clash, Lao Yangtou hasn't fully absorbed the situation when his son and girlfriend rush off to work in Kekexili, leaving Brooks in his care. Unprepared, Lao Yangtou awkwardly takes on the role of Brooks' guardian, and the two often clash due to the cultural differences and language barrier between the East and the West. To provide Brooks with fresh milk, Lao Yangtou approaches Director Wang (portrayed by Tianzuo Liu) of the local cultural station who raises dairy cows. Seizing the opportunity, Director Wang invites Lao Yangtou to make a comeback and teach shadow puppetry. With Director Wang's relentless persuasion and the influence of Brooks, Lao Yangtou's shadow puppet class finally opens, and he develops a close bond with Brooks through the unique and warm communication of shadow puppetry.
