The story takes place after the end of World War II, where the ravages of war leave the land scarred, yet the gradual revival of life is undeniable. Mateson (Woody Harrelson) and Peter (Billy Crudup) are fortunate to have survived the front lines, and now they want to reclaim their former cowboy lives. However, everything is changing; can their old times be replayed? When they return to their former small town, Mateson and Peter discover that everything is already different. Now managing the town is the former ranch owner Ed (Sam Elliott), whose presence greatly irritates the headstrong Mateson. In the town, Mateson and Peter encounter a woman named Mona (Patricia Arquette), and after both fall in love, how long can their friendship last?
