After this high-profile couple—Grace (Julianne Moore) and her 23-years-younger husband, Joy (Charles Melton)—rose to fame from a gossip magazine, their romantic story has captivated the nation for a full 20 years. Now, they are preparing to send their twin children to college. Meanwhile, Hollywood actress Elizabeth (Natalie Portman) is preparing for a film that tells the love story of Grace and Joy. To better understand her character, she decides to live with Grace and Joy for a while. Joy has never truly confronted his youthful past, and now, in his 30s, he has become an empty-nester and is beginning to face the realities of life. As Elizabeth and Grace scrutinize each other, the similarities and differences between the two women gradually reveal themselves. The pressures from the outside world also create cracks in the family dynamics, leading to a series of conflicts and challenges.
