In 1929, Vietnam was a French colony, and a 15-year-old French girl (played by Jeanne Moreau) studied at a girls' boarding school in Saigon. Every holiday, she would return home, where her mother ran a very small school with little income. She had two brothers: the elder, Bill, was a drug addict and a bully, while the younger, Paul, was timid and often bullied by Bill. One day, the girl bid farewell to her mother as usual and took a ferry back to school. On the boat, she met a wealthy Chinese gentleman (played by Tony Leung Ka-fai) sitting in a black limousine; he was the only son of a Chinese millionaire. The Chinese man was attracted to the white girl and struck up a conversation. They hit it off. Knowing that some girls at her boarding school engaged in prostitution, the girl also wanted to find a wealthy man to try, so she proactively chatted with him. After disembarking, they toured Saigon together and had Chinese food in a restaurant; the man drove her back to school in his car. The next day, as soon as school was over, the black car was waiting at the school gate. The two quickly fell in love. The man took the girl to his mansion, a place often used by wealthy Chinese to keep their mistresses. They secretly met here, bathed, and played together.
