University professor Kenzo Oshima (played by Nobumi Hisamatsu) is stabbed to death by an unidentified assailant in an alley in Tokyo. Officer Tokitsukawa (played by Eiki Takahashi) and Detective Kamei (played by Junji Takada) from the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department arrive at the scene. According to the first witness, the victim gasped "Tokitsukawa..." and then passed away. Oshima was a renowned specialist in "mitochondrial studies," but Tokitsukawa has never heard of him... Confused, Tokitsukawa begins his investigation and spots a suspicious figure in nearby surveillance footage. To find clues, Tokitsukawa and his team question associate professor Yumi Hayase (played by Yuka Kurotani) and Hiroshi Nakazono (played by Shunsuke Nakamura), the president of a company supporting Oshima's research, and learn a shocking fact. The man in the surveillance footage must be the childhood friend of both Yumi and Nakazono, Shogo Akai (played by Yutaka Matsuo). Yumi, Nakazono, and Akai are all from Shin-Tokitsukawa Town in Hokkaido and vowed to maintain their friendship forever, but Yumi and Nakazono moved to Tokyo for university. It is said that only Akai stayed behind to take over the family farm. Akai is seriously involved in crop breeding and is well-acquainted with Oshima through his agricultural expertise, but since Oshima frequently visited Akai to consult about the breeding, it seemed he was trying to dismiss Akai as simply "a recent acquaintance."
