In a typical corner grocery store in Budapest, Hungary, owner Hugo Matuschek (Frank Morgan) has been running the shop for years, assisted by his best employee, the experienced Alfred Kralik (James Stewart). When Clara Novak (Margaret Sullavan) comes to apply for a job, she is quickly hired by Hugo, but she and Alfred cannot stand each other. Lonely and infatuated, Alfred has a pen pal he has never met. When he secretly goes to meet his pen pal at a café, he discovers that the pen friend he has long admired is actually Clara, the very person he dislikes. Fate intervenes, and after being fired by Hugo, Alfred feels too embarrassed to approach her.
