In a typical corner grocery store in Budapest, Hungary, owner Hugo Matuschek (Frank Morgan) has been running the shop for years, assisted by his best employee, the experienced Alfred Kralik (James Stewart). When Clara Novak (Margaret Sullavan) comes to apply for a job, she is quickly hired by Hugo, but she and Alfred cannot stand each other. Lonely and infatuated, Alfred has a pen pal he has never met. When he secretly goes to meet his pen pal at a café, he discovers that the pen friend he has long admired is actually Clara, the very person he dislikes. Fate intervenes, and after being fired by Hugo, Alfred feels too embarrassed to approach her. Directed by the famous film comedy master Ernst Lubitsch, the classic comedy film "The Shop Around the Corner" is included in the American Film Institute's list of the top 100 love stories of the century. The film captures the optimistic spirit of 1940s comedy and was adapted into the 1998 remake "You've Got Mail."
