The film is adapted from Lawrence Block's 1992 crime novel of the same name. Liam Neeson plays Matthew Scudder, a former New York police officer who is now an unlicensed private detective. A series of kidnappings targeting the wives of drug dealers occurs in New York, with the victims brutally murdered. Scudder agrees to help one of the victims' husbands (Dan Stevens) and his own brother, with the assistance of a former colleague and a 17-year-old street artist, to find the two killers behind the scenes.
