Honest and hardworking Klaus (played by Edward G. Robinson) is a cashier whose greatest hobby is painting, but he has never considered making money by selling his work. One day, Klaus meets a woman named Katie (played by Joan Bennett), and driven by vanity, he lies to Katie claiming he is a painter. Johnny (played by Dan Duryea), Katie's boyfriend of many years, sees Katie merely as a tool for his own gain, while Klaus becomes Katie's cash cow. Doubting Klaus's true identity, Johnny takes Klaus's paintings to sell, unexpectedly gaining unanimous recognition from art critics, with Katie even claiming to be the author of these paintings. When Klaus proposes to Katie, he is met with her ruthless laughter, leading him to harbor murderous thoughts in anger.
