On a rainy night, Ray (John Getz) is having an affair with Abby (Frances McDormand) at a hotel. Ray is a bartender, while Abby is the wife of the bar owner, Marty (Dan Hedaya). Marty suspects his wife is cheating, so he hires detective Visser to investigate. Furious upon learning the truth, Marty sneaks into Ray's house, attempting to take his wife away, but is injured during a struggle. Marty secretly meets Visser and decides to pay him to kill the two. Visser sneaks into Ray's house and finds Abby's gun. After returning, he shows Marty photos of the two being killed and, taking advantage of Marty's distraction, shoots him. Ray discovers Marty's body and mistakenly believes Abby is responsible, so he disposes of the corpse. Later that night, Ray returns to the bar and is shocked to find the forged photos created by Visser. At this moment, both Ray and Abby are unaware that the threat of death is closing in on them... This film is the debut work of the Coen brothers, created in 1984, produced with only $800,000 and completed in two months. In 2009, producer Zhang Weiping spent $2 million to acquire the rights to the film and invited Zhang Yimou to adapt it into "A Woman, a Gun and a Noodle Shop."
