A young woman (Joan Fontaine) first meets the master of Manderley, Maxim de Winter (Laurence Olivier), by the edge of a cliff. She thinks he is about to commit suicide by jumping into the sea and cries out, which angers him greatly. However, their subsequent acquaintance and deepening relationship lead them to fall in love and marry, with the woman becoming the mistress of Manderley.
Just as their happy life seems about to begin, this new bride encounters a sinister "chill." She discovers the shadow of Maxim's deceased first wife, Rebecca, everywhere in the estate. Her name leaves traces in the furniture, and what unsettles the new bride even more is the housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers, who holds lingering affection for Rebecca and harbors resentment towards the new mistress. Even Maxim is reluctant to explain it all, as if he still has feelings for his late wife.
Rebecca looms like a nightmare over Manderley, and things begin to get increasingly complicated.
