Kern County Sheriff's Deputy Joe "Dick" Deacon (played by Denzel Washington) is sent to Los Angeles for what should be a straightforward evidence-gathering task. Instead, he gets drawn into a manhunt for a serial killer who is terrorizing the city. Leading the hunt is Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim Baxter (played by Rami Malek), who is greatly impressed by Deacon's police instincts and privately seeks his assistance. While the two pursue the main suspect, Albert Sparma (played by Jared Leto), Baxter is unaware that the investigation is stirring up painful memories for Deacon, and the dark secrets that emerge threaten not only the case but could lead to even greater repercussions.
