The story takes place in early 20th century Belfast, Northern Ireland. Recently released from prison, Johnny (James Mason) gets involved in a robbery and, while trying to protect his teammates, is shot by the police. In the ensuing struggle, Johnny accidentally kills a police officer, landing him in serious trouble and making him a wanted man throughout the city. Severely injured and exhausted, Johnny passes out. A desperate and impoverished scoundrel named Sheil (F.J. McCormick) discovers Johnny's whereabouts and sees an opportunity for profit. He reports the information to Father Tom (W.G. Fay), but is intercepted by Catherine (Kathleen Ryan). Catherine reaches Johnny, who is hiding in the home of the mad painter, Ritchie (Robert Newton), before Sheil can catch up, and together they embark on a journey to escape.
