Shigekichi Satake (played by Noboru Sato), who comes from a rural area in Shinshu, marries the upper-class heiress Taeko (played by Michiyo Okubo). Shigekichi leads a rough life, smoking cheap cigarettes, eating chazuke, and traveling in third-class carriages. Taeko cannot stand her husband's "low-class" habits and often sneaks out to have fun with her friends from school.
