"Spotlight" is a column of the Boston Globe, and Robbie Robinson (played by Michael Keaton) is the editor of the "Spotlight" section, which has an independent investigative team comprising Sasha Pfeiffer (played by Rachel McAdams), Michael (played by Mark Ruffalo), and Matt Carroll (played by Brian d'Arcy James). When Marty Baron (played by Liev Schreiber) takes over as the editor of the Globe, he begins to assign Robinson and his team to closely follow a long-buried case involving a Catholic priest who sexually abused children in the parish. Although they initially think it’s just a small task, they soon realize there is a series of incidents behind it, involving hundreds of victims, and the church has privately settled with the victims and sent people to cover up these crimes. As the investigation deepens, they uncover more evidence of this conspiracy, revealing that such atrocities are occurring not only with clergy but also in areas beyond Boston and even worldwide. Robinson and his team face obstruction from local officials. Pressure from both forces within and outside the church mounts on them to abandon the case.
