Considered by fans as a romance benchmark, "Before Sunrise" and "Before Sunset" finally welcome their third installment, "Before Midnight." In the first film, American youth Jesse (Ethan Hawke) meets French girl Celine (Julie Delpy) on a train, and they spend an unforgettable night in Vienna; nine years later in the second film, Jesse has become a writer, and his novel brings him and Celine back together in Paris, where they rekindle their romance before sunset. Now, another nine years have passed, and Jesse and Celine have been living together with twin daughters, gaining deeper insights into life and love. "Before Midnight" captures their last day of vacation on a small island in southern Peloponnese, Greece. Director Richard Linklater and the two leads seem to be on a date with movie fans every nine years; although the trilogy spans 18 years, the storyline could almost fit on the back of a single sheet of paper. The film traditionally narrates the story solely through dialogue between the characters, as the two protagonists walk through tranquil villages or sit leisurely on terraces and at dining tables, constantly discussing topics like literature, love, life, and gender. However, unlike the previous two films, as they finally come together, the romance of love begins to be replaced by the mundane realities of life and the practicality of being together, accompanied by squabbles and disagreements. How to maintain love beneath the veil of "marriage"? The film unfolds 18 years of their relationship, gradually resolving those small grievances, presenting the most genuine and touching aspects of love.
