This film is based on a true case from Indianapolis, Indiana in 1965. A girl named Sylvia (Ellen Page) moves in with her sister Jenny (Hayley McFarland) to stay with single mother Gertrude Baniszewski (Catherine Keener), who has seven children, because their parents are busy working at an amusement park. Gertrude's eldest daughter, Paula (Ari Graynor), becomes pregnant out of wedlock, and Sylvia inadvertently overhears this news, accidentally telling her classmates, which leads to the information leaking out. Paula, infuriated, takes her anger out on Sylvia, resulting in her being punished by Gertrude. After that, Gertrude, who is an alcoholic, blames all family problems on Sylvia's presence, secretly imprisoning her in the basement and encouraging her children to torture Sylvia. Furthermore, other children in the town also participate in this cruel torment, collectively committing one of the most serious crimes against an individual in American history. Catherine Keener was nominated for the 2008 Emmy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for this film.
