Before World War I, the German Z (played by Oskar Werner) and the Frenchman O (played by Henri Serre) meet in Paris. They share a deep mutual interest in poetry and novels, and even find themselves captivated by the same sculpture. Naturally, both Z and O fall in love with the same woman: the intelligent and beautiful Catherine (played by Jeanne Moreau). In this relationship, O chooses to support the gentle and naive Z. They go on vacation in the countryside and enjoy wonderful times together. However, the outbreak of World War I leads to a loss of contact, and during their service in their respective countries, they worry about the possibility of killing their friend on the battlefield. Z continuously writes letters to his wife Catherine. After the war, Z and O meet again, and O realizes that the relationship between Z and Catherine is troubled—she has never stopped pursuing feelings outside of marriage, enjoying freedom in various romantic relationships. O stays at Z's home, and Catherine does not hide her affection for O. This triangular relationship remains balanced and happy, with outsiders completely oblivious to the dynamics. When O plans to leave, Catherine’s straightforward and sharp character brings changes to the situation...
