In the late 1970s, elementary school teacher Xu Lingjun (Zhu Shimao), who had spent nearly half his life as a wrangler in the northwest Chéle Chuan ranch, made his way to Beijing Hotel to meet his father, Xu Jingyou (Liu Qiong), a Chinese-American entrepreneur, for the first time in 30 years. Years ago, in pursuit of personal freedom, Xu Jingyou couldn't tolerate his unhappy marriage and left his wife and children for America. This time, he intends to bring Xu Lingjun back to the U.S. to inherit his business. During their conversation, Xu Lingjun does not see merging into the collective and always prioritizing the country's interests as a sign of outdated thinking. He does not envy his father's comfortable life. Reflecting on the road he has traveled over the decades, although he had a tragic childhood as an abandoned child and was labeled a rightist and sent to the ranch in his youth, he has often felt the warmth of humanity from the simple and kind-hearted villagers in the pastoral areas. After marrying the unfortunate woman Li Xiuzhi (Cong Shan) during difficult times, Xu Lingjun has tasted both the bitterness and sweetness of hardship and reward. He believes that now that the country has finally overcome the big hurdle of the "Cultural Revolution," individuals should stand by their family and friends and follow the country towards rebirth without abandoning it.
