Just graduated medical student K保本 (played by Yuzo Kayama) comes to a small clinic in a poor rural area for an internship, introduced by his father. His mentor is a quirky physician known as Red Beard (played by Toshiro Mifune). At first, K保本, who longs for Nagasaki, despises this slum and blames Red Beard, feeling deceived and out of place. Red Beard is a renowned master of medicine in the area. He does not impose any demands on K保本 but quietly practices medicine, unafraid of the powerful and uncompensated for his work. He has healed countless patients, including a mentally ill young woman (played by Kyôko Kagawa) due to abuse, a drunk man paralyzed from alcohol abuse, and a young prostitute suffering from sexually transmitted diseases after being sold to a brothel, among others. Through assisting Red Beard in saving lives, K保本 gradually realizes the importance of medical ethics and corrects his attitude towards life...
