Russian philosopher and psychologist Lou Andreas-Salomé lives in widowhood in Nazi Germany. The visit of a young scholar prompts her to reminisce about her past, bringing to mind her student years in St. Petersburg, her achievements and loves in her youth. This film is a biographical account of philosopher Salomé, presenting the three most significant and legendary periods of her life through cross-cutting edits, linked by postcards. The characters are placed between static scenes and figures, as if walking within a painting.
