Max McCaskey (Clark Gable) and Sand (Spencer Tracy) are two oil tycoons who, after a series of failures and bankruptcies, finally made enough money to not only pay off their debts but also establish a foothold in the oil industry. One day, Max encounters a girl named Bestie (Claudette Colbert) in town, and they spend a romantic night together. However, when Max confesses his feelings to Bestie, she turns him down.
