At the bottom of the Yoshiwara pleasure district, men and women indulge in their desires. The beautiful Chiyo (played by Rie Nakagawa) stands alone in the deep shadows of the night, unnoticed by anyone. Several of her customers have died under mysterious circumstances, leading Chiyo to earn the terrifying nickname "Reaper." She places her hopes on her lover Tomizō (played by Akira Takahashi), but he is just a small-time thug who is willing to betray his lover for money. Chiyo, repeatedly deceived, has a fleeting vision of the blind girl Koyuki (played by Yuri Yamashina), who is about to be executed for adultery. Through this encounter, she meets Koyuki's husband Umeji (played by Shigeru Dōshita), who loves dolls more than his wife. Umeji discovers the joys of life through Chiyo and hopes to escape with her from this hopeless place…
