The story takes place in 1845, just as the western migration begins. To cross the desolate and perilous wilderness, courage and luck are not enough; wisdom is essential. Three families decide to leave their homeland in search of a new life. For their safety, they seek out a guide named Mick (played by Bruce Greenwood), hoping he can escort them safely to their destination. As the group goes further along what Mick refers to as the shortcut, the increasingly desolate scenery and unfamiliar environment make them realize they are lost. Resources are dwindling, and hunger and panic are gradually sapping their will. Just when they feel they have no way out, the arrival of a local native brings new hope; however, they cannot be sure whether this newcomer is a friend or an enemy.
