Gustave (played by Lino Ventura) is a seasoned gangster who, after being imprisoned, uses all his wits to successfully escape from prison. Afterwards, Gustave seeks refuge with his sister Manouch (played by Christine Fabréga) who lives in Paris. Gustave is tired of the infighting within the gang, so he decides to team up with a group of outlaws for one last job to secure his "retirement fund," hoping to walk away from crime for good. However, having been immersed in organized crime for so long, can he really change his ways so easily? Detective Brotte (played by Paul Meurisse) closely follows Gustave like an eagle pursuing its prey. He doesn't want money or power; his only goal is to find an opportunity to apprehend Gustave one day.
