14-year-old Mouchette (played by Nadine Nortier) lives in the French countryside, where her childhood is bleak and filled with hardship. Her father (Paul Hebert) is a heavy-drinking bootlegger who neglects household responsibilities; her mother (Marie Cardinal) is terminally ill, lying in bed all day waiting for death; her crying baby brother causes constant annoyance. The family's struggles force this young girl to mature too quickly; her hard-earned money is taken by her father, and she is often beaten. At school, she is mocked and bullied by classmates, and the stubborn Mouchette can only vent her frustration by throwing dirt clots at them after class. What should have been a joyful and carefree childhood has withered away too soon... The film won the OCIC Award at the 1967 Cannes Film Festival, the Best Film Award from the French Film Critics Association in 1968, the Best Foreign Film Director Award from the Italian National Syndicate of Film Journalists in 1969, and the Pasinetti Award for Best Film at the 1967 Venice Film Festival.
