Jimmy (Channing Tatum) was once a glamorous sports star, but due to an injury, he had to say goodbye to his athletic career. Now, he works at a highway toll booth, living a life of hardship and frustration. Worse yet, even this job ultimately abandons him when he is fired. Jimmy, feeling hopeless, visits his brother Clyde (Adam Driver), who enthusiastically invites him to join his plan to rob a highway. To ensure the plan can be carried out smoothly, the two brothers recruit demolition expert Joe (Daniel Craig) to join their team. Just as everything is proceeding in an orderly manner, the highway they intend to rob suddenly announces it will finish construction ahead of schedule, which means there is little time left for Jimmy and his crew.
