The Philippine emerging director Kenneth Lim Dagatan’s film "Mother's Nightmare," selected for the Sundance Film Festival and several international fantasy film festivals, is set against the backdrop of the Philippines at the end of World War II. Living in a remote family, two siblings traverse the forest to find food for their gravely ill mother, who they have no food for at home. Unexpectedly, they meet a fairy in an abandoned church who helps them and advises them to let a cicada crawl into their mother’s body to cure her. The mother does heal, but it seems she is no longer their mother. The film is rich in Filipino characteristics, blending local legends, religious beliefs, war and colonial history into a dark fairy tale that evokes a sense of unease through body transformations and chilling soundscapes.
